Program
For years the ISA has used the term "Final Control Element" to refer to what is generally called a control valve. The term "Final Control Element" is used to describe any device in a process loop whose movement causes a change, which can be measured and controlled. Many products fall into this category along with valves, including louvers, pumps, conveyer belts and motor relays. This discussion will address the valve positioner and the new developments in measuring valve position accurately without the cumbersome and potentially lengthy long calibration procedures, associated in setting up a control valve.

Positioners are used on just about any style of valve, whether having a "Linear" or "Rotary" movement of the valve actuation. Calibration procedures involving adjusting springs, choosing correct cams and linkages along with setting Span and Gain can be very lengthy as well as adding another variable in accurate control valve calibration. New advances in positioner engineering now incorporates not only powerful diagnostics and auto calibration, but have taken all the guesswork of mechanical mounting and linkage by utilizing a linkage-less travel feedback system capability. There are no touching parts between the valve stem and positioner.

This discussion will address the new development in this technology including having the ability to wirelessly communicating this information back to a PLC or DCS operating system.
