The Joint Water Pollution Control Plant, JWPCP, is one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in the world.

By special invitation, ISA Los Angeles Section will be having a special behind-the-scene van tour on Tuesday, September 19th! Following the tour, we will meet at Janos Pizza nearby for an update on the February 22nd table-top show, Instrumentation 2007 and pizza. The tour and meeting are open to all, however this is an "insider's tour" and due to security issues, only those who RSVP in advance will be allowed to go on the van tour bus.

Everyone must RSVP in advance order to take the bus tour into the plant. Seats are limited. Meet at the LASD plant administration building at 2pm, at 24501 S. Figueroa St., Carson, CA 90745. The building is located on the west side of Figueroa Street between Sepulveda and Lomita Blvds. The Sepulveda exit off the 110 (Harbor) Freeway is the closest freeway access. Map and directions.

After the tour, will meet at Janos Pizza House, 139 East Lomita Boulevard, Carson (310) 518-2428. From LASD, take Sepulveda south to Lomita. Left on Lomita. Pass through light at Wilmington and make a left into the shopping center.

About the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant
The plant occupies approximately 350 acres to the east of the Harbor (110) Freeway south of Sepulveda in Carson. It provides both primary and secondary treatment for approximately 320 million gallons of wastewater per day. Solids collected in primary and secondary treatment are processed in anaerobic digestion tanks where bacteria break down organic material and produce methane gas. After digestion, the solids are dewatered and hauled off-site for use in composting, land application, or combined with municipal solid waste for co-disposal. Methane gas generated in the anaerobic digestion process is used to produce power and digester heating steam in a combined cycle power plant that utilizes gas turbines and waste-heat recovery steam generators. The on-site generation of power permits the JWPCP to be self-sufficient with respect to its energy requirements.

The plant serves a population of approximately 3 1/2 million people throughout Los Angeles County. Prior to discharge, the treated wastewater is disinfected with hypochlorite and sent to the Pacific Ocean through a network of outfalls. These outfalls extend two miles off the coast of Southern California into the Palos Verdes Peninsula to a depth of 200 feet.
